Roy’s Award Comes Home!

Roy Shafer was COSI’s second President through the 80’s and into the 90’s (having started here as a 13 year old volunteer).  Roy was held in high regard held worldwide for his work through COSI, the international Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) board, and then as an organizational coach.

When Roy died unexpectedly in 2005, the ASTC association established a prestigious set of awards in his memory—the Roy L. Shafer Leading Edge Awards (known as the “Edgies”).  The awards have been won by leading centers around the world in recognition of best practice in several categories.  (ASTC has membership of science centers from over 40 countries and is the only worldwide organization of its kind).

Roy was also a close personal friend—and someone who I miss continually—particularly as I’m reminded daily of his importance to COSI and to myself as I pass by the Spectrum “tree” out front that we dedicated to Roy after I joined the team here in 2006.

At the opening of this year’s international conference, COSI was awarded the Roy L. Shafer Edge for Business Practice, recognizing the ground breaking work we have done with our @COSI model of integrating other partners like OSU, the Ohio Stem Learning Network (OSLN), Metro School, WOSU and others into our public experience and support of science learning.  This is a prestigious award and continues to raise the stature of our work and partnerships.

Importantly to me I wanted to see the highest international award for science centers, in Roy’s honor, brought back to COSI through the type of innovative and entrepreneurial work that earned Roy and COSI the reputation achieved during Roy’s leadership here.

This was truly a team effort—and I was glad that we had other team members with me on stage to accept the award and the recognition.

Roy—we miss you –but glad to see your spirit still running through our DNA as recognized in this coveted award!
